The definition of Spiritual Wellness changes person to person, but often references “one’s sense of purpose, life’s meaning, our relationships to other people, and a self-awareness to these things.”

Many define spirituality according to religious values or find expressions of spirituality through personal relationships or through nature. Overall, it is living a personal and professional life full of meaning, purpose, and rich relationships with others.

Per the article provided below, here are 5 Habits for Spiritual Wellness:

- Meditation

- Yoga

Today, we’re discussing Meditation and Yoga.

For many, practicing meditation, relaxation, and yoga can provide physical and mental benefits, especially if you incorporate it into your daily or weekly routines. Practicing these calming activities can be everything from a 30-min session of Yoga to sitting down and doing a simple breathing exercise. Ultimately, they allow time for reflection and for the stilling of the mind.

Especially for those who experience stress in their day-to-day lives, this mind-stilling is important to gather and ground yourself. Through this process, you bring the body, mind, and senses into balance which, in turn, relaxes the nervous system.

As we experience external stressors and the ups and downs of pushing through the COVID-19 Pandemic, this is especially important. If you haven’t tried Meditation or Yoga in the past, consider giving it a shot! Below, we have attached some articles to provide more information.

We are discussing connecting with the world and with nature as it relates to Spiritual Wellness. Connecting with the world around us can be great for helping our health!

The research of Dr. Frances Kuo of the University of Illinois shows that in the poorer neighborhoods of Chicago, living near green spaces brought residents greater calm and lower stress, a stronger sense of connection to neighbors, and less violence in their neighborhoods.

Being in nature reduces stress, leading to better overall mental health. Overall, being in nature can be a pathway to human health and happiness.

Here are a few ways to get connected to nature:

1. Take your lunch outside or take a walk outside on your work breaks

2. Take a day-long road trip to somewhere you’ve never been

3. Buy yourself flowers. Nice ones, as nice as you’d buy for anybody else

Our topic is Reflection & Acceptance.

Part of self-care requires learning about and knowing ourselves at a deep level. It’s not easy, as we’re complex human beings, but it’s also important. This self-awareness is key to a high emotional intelligence.

Without self-awareness, it is difficult to regulate your emotions, control your fears, and avoid impulsive outbursts when you feel threatened or rejected. To become self-aware, it’s important to get outside our egos, reflect, and adapt.

The article below compares knowing oneself to peeling back the layers of an onion. "The outer layers of the onion are the visible ways you present yourself to the…Beneath those outer layers resides your understanding of your strengths and weaknesses and what you need and desire from the world around you.” As you peel back each layer you gain further understanding of your values, experiences, motivations, and vulnerabilities.

Next in the process of gaining self-awareness is self-reflection and introspection. Reflect on your life story, considering your purpose, experiences, and beliefs and begin to move your life in the direction you want. Use self-reflection to accept who you are at your core. Some use Yoga, Meditation, or Journaling to facilitate this sort of reflection.
