Remembering Charles W. Hass

A rather typical picture of Charles

A rather typical picture of Charles

Written by Michael Osborn (Zeta Epsilon)

You may have sat at an NCD Convention Banquet and heard the name Charles Hass when the Charles W. Hass Memorial award was awarded but you may not know who Charles Hass was and why an award was created in his honor.

Charles Hass was initiated into the Gamma Pi Chapter at Purdue University in 1992. My first interaction with Charles was in 1995 watching him run for District Office at a block meeting being held at Eastern Michigan University. To be completely honest, from a first impression standpoint I was a bit concerned about Charles as a district officer as he seemed loud, a little too outgoing, and a little crazy from a far. When Charles was elected NCD President I had no idea how our paths would intertwine moving forward. Shortly after Charles was elected I was asked to become one of the NCD Governors and even though my term did not start until National Convention, Charles was on the phone early on excited to work with me to help the district grow and laid out his plans and focus and sought advice. He essentially on-boarded me as District Governor so that the transition into the position was seamless in so many ways. Ultimately those things that gave me pause from my first impression were the things that made him a great NCD President.

Charles had a vision to try to bring the district closer together and to increase interaction between the District Council and the chapters. He was never one to shy away from a conversation with any Brother and sought opportunities to meet Brothers at any event possible. In fact for his spring break he made a tour around the district, crashing on floors and couches and brought a couple of Gamma Pi Brothers (future district officers) with him to share in the fun. One memory that wraps up Charles for me is that as Governor I made the trip to Ohio University for a Block Meeting. At the block meeting Charles mentioned to me that he and others were making the 6 hour trip from Athens to the installation of the chapter at Wake Forest University. He worked hard to convince me to go on the trip, making me forget that while it was only a 6 hour trip to Wake Forest it was 12-14 hours back home. So with Charles’ influence and despite not having packed clothing appropriate for a chapter installation, I made the trip. Thank goodness for credit cards so I could try to find suitable clothing in North Carolina on a Sunday morning. And yes, I made it back to Michigan just in time to teach the next day, wearing the clothes I bought in North Carolina the day before.

That was a typical Charles story. He was all about getting people together and convincing people that they wanted to do things Fraternally that they might not have done on their own. He was a force in moving the NCD into the District we are today.

Following his term as NCD president he and I remained close friends as he did with many others he interacted with during that year. Also following his term in office Charles stayed involved in many ways and still worked to bring Brothers together not only in the NCD but in every location he moved to for his job that had a chapter nearby. When he moved to Indianapolis post graduation he became involved with the Alpha Beta Chapter at Butler. When his job transferred him to Dallas, Charles found a way to interact with and support the Delta Sigma Chapter at UT Arlington. Just days before his untimely death he was key in getting a group of Brothers and Sisters from multiple districts together in Tampa to keep that connection that was brought from our bonds of Brotherhood.

In 2000 Charles moved to the San Francisco area for his work with Federal Express. He found a place that he felt was home. On January 27, 2001 Charles made a trip to a local convenience store with a new friend, on his way out he and his friend were attacked, robbed and Charles was stabbed in the parking lot and later died of his wounds. His funeral back home in Indianapolis was attended by Brothers and Sisters from across the district and the country.

Despite Charles’s short involvement in Kappa Kappa Psi he made a lasting impact on the North Central District that lasts to the present day. It is because of all he dedicated to Kappa Kappa Psi that an award was created in his honor in 2001.

The Charles W. Hass award is granted by the North Central District in recognition of outstanding contributions to the Fraternity by an alumnus or alumna of the Fraternity. An individual is eligible for the award after five years of alumni status and after an application is submitted to the Governor(s) and President by a chapter in the North Central District or the district council.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

MEET MARY CLAIRE REYNOLDS

  • Home chapter – Mu Delta @ Western Michigan University

  • Initiation period – Spring 2011

  • Graduation date – May 2014

  • Major or study concentration – Music Education

  • Main Instrument – Clarinet

  • Current profession – Director of Bands @ Beal City Public Schools

  • Current city – Mt. Pleasant, MI

Why did you join KKPsi or what drew you KKPsi? - “When I entered college as a freshmen in the Bronco Marching Band, I immediately felt welcomed by the environment and atmosphere. I think most individuals who come across this spotlight will understand the incredible and indescribable connections you create in college marching band, and among this uplifting group of people, I found the Brothers standing out above the rest. In the Brothers I met before taking my own membership journey, I found kindness, friendship, and a willingness to help. I realized that if I wanted to get the most out of my collegiate experience, that I should do my best to surround myself with those people. I wanted to be like them.”

What positions or responsibilities did you hold in your chapter? - “I served the Mu Delta chapter in many capacities, including spending 4 years on the Membership Education committee. Positions I have held include Assistant Membership Educator, Music Director, Recording Secretary, Relations Officer, 2014 District Convention Delegate, and Vice President for Membership. I thoroughly enjoyed serving in a variety of ways throughout my time in the chapter, but the positions I loved most were my time as the Relations Officer and Vice President for Membership. As Relations Officer, I grew a passion for traveling the district, meeting new Brothers, and shared that passion with my chapter. As Vice President for Membership, I taught the 12 members of the Iota class the ways of the Fraternity, and shared in their eagerness to serve and strive.”

Name a favorite memory from your Active membership. - “My favorite memory from my Active membership would absolutely have to be the 2014 NCD Convention in Dayton. I served the Mu Delta chapter as delegate, gained more insight on the workings of our Fraternity on a larger level, and learned from other chapters and Brothers. This convention came at the end of my year serving as Relations Officer, in which I had encouraged my chapter to engage in district travel more than they had in several years; we were even strong contenders for the Golden Gas Can! Furthermore, at this convention I was chosen as a Student Conductor for the District Reading Band and was thrilled to conduct the ensemble through "Kentucky 1800" after receiving valuable one-on-one feedback from Dr. Richard Suk. This opportunity really ignited my passion for conducting, am I am still participating in experiences of this nature today.”

How has KKPsi helped you in the "real world"? (professionally or personally, or both) - “My time in Kappa Kappa Psi has helped me both professionally and personally. As I mentioned before, the Fraternity has given me ample opportunities to hone my craft in a manner that benefits my professional life, and has provided me numerous networking opportunities. Furthermore, being a Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi has helped me become the best version of myself. Learning the ideals of the Fraternity, serving in a variety of leadership positions, and working with other Brothers helped me become the person I need to be for my students. For me, being a Brother was not always easy. When I was younger, I struggled to see the bigger picture, and how I fit into the chapter dynamic. There were times that I questioned my worthiness, but my Brothers were always there to help me be strong. I experienced a great deal of personal growth in college that I attribute to my time and service in Kappa Kappa Psi.”

Name one thing you want to get out of the NCDAA. - “I would really love to make more connections with alumni brothers. During my Active years, I did not branch out and meet Brothers from other chapters until I was nearing the end of my college career, but those were some of my best times as an Active, and they brought me closer to my own chapter as well. I believe I'm not alone among alum when I say that life after college can be lonely and isolating if you let it. Having this avenue to reach out and meet others that share my interests will be invaluable for my personal and professional life.”

What are you most looking forward to as a member of the NCDAA? - “I am looking forward to being able to continue to serve in any capacity I can. Being an Active collegiate member was so inspiring, and I hope to continue to be energized by the organization by communicating with other alum and attending programming. I find that I am a better educator when I engage in things outside of school that excite me. I'm thrilled that I have the opportunity to still be involved with the Fraternity that afforded me so many opportunities and experiences.”

Name any of your personal social media accounts that you would like people to connect with you. - “Anyone is welcome to add me on Facebook, Twitter: @MsReynoldsBC, Instagram: mcreyn76, or Snapchat: murclurr.”

Why did you join KKPsi or what drew you KKPsi? - “The main reason why I joined Kappa Kappa Psi was that I was looking for something bigger than myself. Initially, I was dragged into it, and I wasn't so sure if I should join (very thankful that I did). As a young freshman, I was looking for something greater than myself. Being in the marching band was a good experience, but I wanted something more. It was thanks to the Eta chapter that inspired me to join that made me discover who I am.”

What positions or responsibilities did you hold in your chapter? - “I was the VP of Membership and the Archives & Branding Committee in Eta. VP of Membership in the NCD. Lead in one class in the spring (the “Nguyen-ers” they named themselves).”

Name a favorite memory from your Active membership. - “One of my favorite memories was watching the ritual band rehearse the first composition competition piece at the 2018 spring convention. It was a fantastic moment watching brothers come together to play music, especially during the degree of the ritual.”

How has KKPsi helped you in the "real world"? (professionally or personally, or both) - “KKPsi has helped me immensely. I honestly wouldn’t be in the job I am in today. They taught me how to be a better leader and to step up when the occasion needs it. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without the lessons of KKPsi.”

Name one thing you want to get out of the NCDAA. - “Looking forward to staying connected with the other members of the association and support the active students.”

  • Initiation period – Winter 2015

  • Graduation date – May 2017

  • Major or study concentration – Marketing

  • Main Instrument – Percussion

  • Current profession – Pricing Analyst

  • Current city – Amherst, OH

Why did you join KKPsi or what drew you KKPsi? - “In high school, I was extremely involved in the band program.  I basically marched all year round between marching band and WGI. It's how I met my friends, created great character, and learned how to balance school work and extracurricular activities.  Our band director was a member of the Bluecoats and alumni of the Fraternity (which I found out after high school), so I was exposed to DCI, too. Experiencing the passion and camaraderie between the members of the band made me feel amazing. I knew these were the kind of people I wanted to be surrounded by throughout my life.

Going into college I knew I NEEDED to continue my marching career. I even learned about Kappa Kappa Psi while I was researching colleges to attend. When I was at band camp, I made sure I knew all of the Brothers and asked as many questions as possible. I was amazed by all of the events they put on during band camp to make the experience fun. I wanted to be someone that invites new and old members to bond after practices. I was always committed to music, so why not join the Fraternity dedicated to serving the bands?”

What positions or responsibilities did you hold in your chapter? - “I was a Brother, which is the most important position you can hold. I wasn't on the board, but I did manage to do a lot as an active member of the chapter. My first National Convention was just months after I crossed over in Spring 2015 and I was a proxy delegate for the Gamma Omicron chapter. It was great to represent another chapter with Brothers that I knew from high school! I was chosen as the delegate to represent my own chapter at NCD Convention in April, as well. Outside of conventions, I was the Fundraising Committee Head from 2016 to 2017. During that period, we held Cope Formal twice a year for any member of the Fine Arts community at Mount Union. My committee and I held candy sales, Yankee Candle sales, and the biggest event of all, TUBAChristmas.”

Name a favorite memory from your Active membership. - “One of my favorite memories as an active Brother was getting to go to National Convention in 2015. Our chapter drove to Kentucky in Helga the "Struggle Bus".  I felt like we were really able to bond being stuck together for a whole week. I met so many great Brothers and Sisters there and attended so many wonderful events. As a newly initiated Brother, I was still excited, but this event blew my mind. The best part was singing the hymn with all the brothers from around the Nation. I'm pretty sure I cried. National Convention just reconfirmed how amazing our Fraternity is.”

How has KKPsi helped you in the "real world"? (professionally or personally, or both) - “Kappa Kappa Psi has helped me in a magnitude of ways. Personally, I learned that though you might not get the recognition you think you deserve, know you're still doing something important.  People remember others by their actions, not words. So remember that recognition is not always verbal. It also showed me how to apply a good attitude toward tasks I'm not too fond of at work. Service isn't always considered fun, but you can make it be!

Professionally, it also paved a way for me for me to improve my networking skills. It's hard to approach strangers, even if they are a Brother, and strike up a conversation. I learned that asking others questions and by being an active listener, you can get pretty far in a conversation.”

Name one thing you want to get out of the NCDAA. - “I want to continue to connect with Brothers and continue conversations around music, work, and life. It's always great to talk to someone that you don't work with or see every day. It's refreshing to hear that others share your struggles and triumphs too.”

What are you most looking forward to as a member of the NCDAA? - “I'm looking forward to meeting Brothers who are outside of my chapter and/or older alumni. Hopefully, we'll have an event near Cleveland soon.”

Name any of your personal social media accounts that you would like people to connect with you. - “My Twitter, Instagram, & Snapchat is @Boisdouis. Feel free to follow or message me!”

Name any other contact information that you are willing to share.
“Message me on any social platform if you would like my number.”
